4: Scanning. After skimming, the reader can read in more detail, slowlier and carefully running your eyes down the page, looking for specific information, this is called scanning. Underline key ideas like numbers and names.

5: Looking for cognates. To further refine the understanding of the passage, look for words that are similar to words in English. In your text, you'll highlight the cognates as you read.

6: Looking for meaning through context. The context is the words surrounding an unknown word. Type of word (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) could be helpful, verb tense (past-tense, future-tense), singular or plural. Or use one of the 6 techniques used by the author: With synonyms, antonyms, examples of the word, explaining it in parenthesis or commas, showing how to use it, or suggesting the meaning with the root, suffix or prefix.
